More background information from the survey.

Survey Background, continued

We also asked some questions to determine what types of technology are currently used within the Earth science community, such as the operating systems and programming languages the respondents used. Multiple choices were allowed.

Operating System and Programming Languages

The majority of the respondents used Linux, Unix, and/or Windows. A smaller number used Macintosh, and very few used IBM or other OSes not listed. The most frequently used programming languages selected were Java, Perl, C++, C, Fortran, and web. Python was used more moderately, but few people used Basic/Visual Basic, C#, Pascal, or other languages not listed.
