Background information about the survey.

Survey Background

A web-based survey tool was used to simplify response submission and data collection. About 3000 invitations to participate were issued, and 100 responses were received. The survey contained 54 questions, but not all questions required answers.

The first section of the survey requested background information that would provide a community profile. The following two pie charts show the division of respondents based on their main role in project/software development and the type of their organization.

Main Role and Organization

System architects/designers/engineers are the largest group, at about 24%, followed by technical/project managers (19%), scientists and principal investigators (17% each), software engineers/developers (13%), and other roles (10%). Most respondents were associated with NASA (46%) or university/academia (23%), with commercial organizations and other government agencies (14% each) covering most of the rest. Only 3% did not belong to one of these groups.
